Please continue all medications unless otherwise instructed by the doctor.

1. Why can’t I eat or drink anything several hours before my colonoscopy?

Our first concern is your health and safety. You will be given sedatives to help you relax during your colonoscopy, and these medications affect your body’s ability to hold food and liquid in your stomach. If you eat or drink several hours before (actual time varies by doctor) your colonoscopy, there is a risk that food or liquid will travel up into your esophagus, where you could breathe it into your lungs. Your procedure will be re-scheduled, if you do not follow the instructions provided by your doctor.

1. How long will my procedure take?

The actual procedure takes approximately 30 minutes. Registration, pre-operative and post-operative care will keep you in the facility for approximately 2 hours. 2. Do I have to drink all the solution to cleanse my colon?

Please follow all instructions and make every effort to drink all of the solution. The height and weight of a patient does not determine the amount of solution needed to purge your colon. If you have a history of constipation, cirrhosis, stroke, dementia, heart disease or kidney disease, please make sure and inform your Gastroenterologist before your procedure.

3. Is a colonoscopy painful? Will I be sedated?

No, a colonoscopy is usually not painful! Almost all colonoscopies can be performed using “intravenous sedation” or “twilight sedation” in which you are very drowsy, but comfortable and still breathing on your own. The most common type of sedation also has a mild amnesic effect, so most patients do not even remember the procedure.

3. What if I start vomiting while drinking the solution?

If you develop symptoms of nausea or vomiting, stop the prep for a few minutes, then resume the process. Go slower and drink one 8 oz. glass every 30 minutes instead of 15 minutes. If you were not able to complete the prep, please call the Your Patient Advisor at (800) 349 0285

A polyp is an abnormal growth found in the colon lining. They vary in size and shape, and while most are benign (non-cancerous), some may turn into cancer. It is important to remove pre-cancerous polyps as a preventative measure for colorectal cancer. Very small polyps may be totally destroyed by fulguration (burning). Larger polyps are removed by a technique called snare polypectomy. A wire loop (snare) is passed through the scope and removes the polyp from the intestinal wall. This technique causes no pain to the patient.

5. How do I pay for the prep medications?

The prep medications purchased through the Your Patient Advisor can be paid for with any major credit card or by electronic check.

5. What can I eat the day before my procedure?

While preparing for a colonoscopy all solids must be emptied from your gastrointestinal tract, by following a clear liquid diet the day before your procedure (in some rare cases 2-3 days before the procedure) . A clear liquid consists of drinks that you can "see through”.

Please note that some doctors may allow full liquids, refer to your instructions for a list of liquids you can drink the day before the procedure.

5. What happens after the colonoscopy?

You will be cared for in a recovery area after the procedure until most of the effects of the medication have worn off. This may take a couple of hours. You will be told how soon you can eat and drink "real" food and will be given other information to get back to your normal routine.

You are not permitted to drive for 12 hours after a colonoscopy to allow time for the sedative to wear off. Typically, the products are not covered by insurance. We can try to run your flexible spending card through our system, however even if our system accepts the transaction, sometimes your insurance company may challenge the charge.

6. How soon may I eat after my procedure?

Unless your physician gives you dietary restrictions, you are free to eat a normal breakfast or lunch after leaving the endoscopy center.

6. Why should I get up so early in the morning the day of the procedure, to take some of the laxatives?

7. Aren’t Fiber rich foods good for bowel movement?

Yes. However, fiber can clog the colonoscope and they do not pass through your digestive system easily. Presence of any solids in your colon will make it difficult to for your physician to view and remove polyps that maybe present. Please avoid fiber rich foods and stop taking fiber supplements two days before your procedure.

7. How soon may I return to work?

Most patients are able to return to work the following day.

7. What happens to my credit card information after it is charged for your fee?

8. I hear that the preparation is hard, what can I do to make it easier?

9. How long after the procedure can I eat solid food?

Typically, you can resume a normal diet once your appetite returns.

9. Why am I restricted from drinking and eating certain colors?
